"The Proper aim of giving is to put the recipients in a state where they no longer need our gifts."
C.S. Lewis (The Four Loves, 1960)
I love this quote as, for me; it embodies the mission of the United Way and its Community Partners. We help those in need by providing a path to independence.
Our Community Partners fulfill these needs in many ways. They allow our aging community to live indeoendently, offer a chance for life without physical and emtional abuse, and create a path for those who are suffering from addiction. They act as role models to help mentor our youth, provide access to information for crisis services, and deliver education in healthy life choices. Lastly, they offer working parents a helping hand toward financial stability, provide guidance and purpose for people with intellectual disabilities, and provide food and shelter for our neighbors in need.
United Way funds are critical to the success of these programs. This reinforces the importance of our jobs as volunteers and community members.
I am continually amazed at the dedication of the volunteers who make up our annual campaign, and the generosity of the citizens of our region. No matter the state of the economy, the political climate, or our own personal struggles, each year the community of Northwest Connecticut shows its compassion and love for people.
I am so proud that we reached our goal of $750,000, but there's more work to be done, and the United Way will be there to lead the charge for next year.
With deepest regards,Joyce Muse
